Explore Your Possibilities
I had a wonderful experience recently that perfectly illustrates the concept of exploring your possibilities. I saw a man 20 feet ahead of me pick something up off the ground and then glance left and right looking for the owner in a way that made it clear he had picked up money and didn't know what to do with it. I mean who wouldn't say yes if asked "did you drop this money?"
Having caught each other's eyes, I began a conversation with him when I reached him, "so, how much money did you find?"
"20 bucks," he replied.
"Wow!" I replied in amazement, "what will you do with it?"
"I'm not sure. I was gonna take a bus uptown, but now I may take a cab."
"There's one way to use it! How about a fancy lunch, or treat yourself to a nicer dinner than you had planned?" I couldn't help but interject some other ideas.
"Well, I feel kind of guilty."
"Yeah, I once found a $5 bill and I gave it to a homeless guy," I informed him.
"That's a great idea, only I don't feel like giving a homeless person 20 bucks."
"Makes sense - you could break it into 20 singles, or four five dollar bills!" I suggested.
"True, and those singles would go a long way at the strip club!" he said, having finally found the possibility that seemed most alive in him at that moment.
With that, he picked up his phone to tell someone about his luck, and I wished him a great day.
What's your unexpected $20 for today? What kinds of things can you do with this new-found possibility? When you're stuck making a decision, this is a great way to figure out what choices make you the most excited to find your direction.
